There is no secret cheap Oakland left. There are tradeoffs. West County and East County, parts of Hayward, San Leandro, and the Eden Area communities still come up when the inner waterfront does not. Newer homes show up in Dublin, Brentwood, Hercules, and San Ramon, with commute math attached.
Buy the routine, not the finish package. A pretty kitchen and a miserable bridge trip is a bad house. So is a bargain that ignores flood, industry, fire, or a school situation you have not actually researched.
