The marina and shoreline trail are the release valve. Downtown has been adding restaurants without becoming a scene. BART makes Oakland and, with patience, San Francisco ordinary. The city is diverse, practical, and increasingly noticed by people priced out of the neighborhoods just north.
It is a strong middle answer: not a small town, not downtown Oakland, still on the water if you choose the west side.
