Luxury in the East Bay is usually land, schools, and quiet, not a high-rise. Piedmont is the city inside Oakland. Orinda, Lafayette, Alamo, and Diablo are the valley and tunnel version. Blackhawk is the gated version. The Berkeley and Oakland hills are the view version, with narrow roads and fire season included.
A luxury budget can also buy a waterfront or a historic house in Alameda, or a prime Oakland neighborhood, which is a different luxury: restaurants and a bridge commute rather than a gate.
Nothing here is a valuation. It is a map of what the top of the market feels like.
