Orinda sits just east of the tunnel, with a small downtown, a BART station, and hills that feel a step removed from Berkeley. The theater in the trees is part of its reputation.

Cross the Caldecott and the light changes. Orinda Village is compact. The station makes a San Francisco commute plausible. Houses climb into neighborhoods where deer are not a surprise and road widths are.

The Bruns Amphitheater, long associated with California Shakespeare Theater, sits in the hills nearby. Confirm what is actually on stage before you plan a season around it. The town itself does not try to be a nightlife city. Dinner and an early train are the local arts.
