Old Town Pinole is the part visitors remember: a short commercial street, civic buildings, and a scale you can walk. The rest of the city is hillside housing and the busier corridor along Appian Way and San Pablo Avenue.
Hercules and the shoreline are next door. San Francisco is possible by BART from El Cerrito or Richmond, not from a station in town. People who live here tend to be oriented to West County first.
